Dietary Guidelines: Tips for Healthy Nutrition
According to Dietary Guidelines
published by the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services (HHS) and the U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA), you can keep a healthy diet if you:
- Make smart food choices
- Find a balance between exercise and eating
- Get the most nutrition from every calorie
The 2010 Dietary Guidelines
show ways to have a healthy eating plan:
- Enjoy your food, but eat less
- Avoid big portions
- Make half your plate fruits and veggies
- Switch to fat-free or low-fat milk
- Chose foods with low sodium numbers
- Drink water instead of sugary drinks
Follow these tips to keep a healthy balance in your diet:
- Include plenty of fruits, veggies and whole grains
- Choose lean meat, poultry, fish, eggs, nuts and beans
- Limit saturated fats, salt and sugars
- Exercise for at least 30 minutes on most days
- Slowly raise the intensity and amount of time you workout
- Teens and children need to be active for 60 minutes on most days
